Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is transforming urban vending with its ambitious Rs 1,425-crore Smart Street Vending Project, creating modern, organized zones to boost hygiene and economy
The project establishes dedicated hawking areas at prime locations: RR Centre with 70 units, Duvvada flyover accommodating another 70 units, and Suryabagh Park featuring the largest cluster of 110 units.
These zones prioritize vendors displaced from footpaths, ensuring fair allocation through transparent surveys and digital lotteries
Each zone integrates solar-powered lighting for sustainability, comprehensive CCTV surveillance for security, and digital payment systems like UPI for cashless transactions.
Additional amenities include water connections, waste management, and shaded seating, elevating street vending to organized retail standards
This initiative supports over 250 vendors initially, curbing encroachments while generating revenue through nominal fees and boosting footfall in these areas.
By modernizing infrastructure, GVMC aims for a cleaner, vendor-friendly Vizag that aligns with smart city goals, promising long-term urban renewal.
