HPCL Commissions 3.55 MMTPA Residue Upgradation Facility at Vizag Refinery
Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) has commissioned a state-of-the-art 3.55 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) Residue Upgradation Facility (RUF) at its Visakhapatnam Refinery. This upgrade targets higher distillate yields from heavy residues, boosting overall refining margins and operational flexibility.
The RUF processes heavier crude oils into valuable products like diesel and petrol, increasing light distillate output by processing vacuum residue from the refinery's existing units. It employs advanced technologies such as hydrocracking and hydrotreating for cleaner fuels meeting BS-VI standards. This addition elevates the refinery's total capacity while enhancing profitability through better product mix.
Located on the east coast, Vizag Refinery strengthens its role as a key energy hub, supporting Andhra Pradesh's industrial growth and energy security. The facility reduces import dependence on middle distillates and aligns with India's push for self-reliance in refining. Expect improved local employment and supply chain efficiencies
By maximizing value from low-grade feedstocks, HPCL improves margins amid volatile oil prices, benefiting shareholders and the economy. Environmentally, it cuts emissions per barrel through efficient conversion, supporting sustainable refining practices.
This milestone positions Vizag Refinery for long-term competitiveness, with ripple effects for regional fuel availability and development.
